EQUIPMENT

What equipment a girl needs depends very much on their age and what their coach desires they have. For example, many of our older girls will have their own bats and other gear, where our t-ballers and 8U players probably won't.  A few things to be aware of:

1) SDYS does provide age appropriate bats for players, so they do not have to have their own.

2) SDYS does not, for hygiene reasons, provide helmets to be shared by the players, so each child should have their own.

3) American Softball Association rules require that for divisions 8U and older, that the batting helmet have an NOCSAE approved facemask affixed. This rule went in to effect last year, and will probably not be a problem for returning players. For those of you buying new facemasks, make sure you look for the NOCSAE stamp.

4) Each girl must have her own glove, and the league encourages girls in 8U and above to have either one or two of their own sliding pads. We highly recommend gloves that are leather, not vinyl, as leather is more durable and better for fielding.

TIP

The most common "parent purchased" equipment problem we see is that the bats or gloves the girls come out with are too big. Check with your sporting goods professional or a board member if you need some assistance, especially with bats, so that we don't ask them to save that shiny new bat for next season when they are a little bigger and stronger to handle it.
