2018 Spring Select Program

What is the Select Program?

The Select Program was formed by USA Softball (our league's governing body) to provide a more competitive environment for highly skilled Recreation league players.

Note: This is not the same as the Fall Select program. Please see the Fall Ball Season page for details regarding the fall select program.

What is the extra time commitment?

In addition to playing on a regular SDYS Spring team, girls who play in the Select program will play with a different group of teammates. SDYS Select teams will play together from the time of team formation in late January until March 31. For comparison, Spring teams will remain together until the year-end tournament concludes on the first weekend in May.

Select team will officially meet (game or practice) once per week, on Sundays. Practices and games for Select Teams will be in addition to the player's normal practices and games for their recreation season teams.

Time commitment on Sundays will vary from week to week, based on a variety of things. Some Sundays might be open, some might have a practice, but other Sundays might require a much longer time commitment due to a tournament-style game schedule and/or possible travel to other fields in San Diego County.

Select practices and games will be in addition to Spring practices and games, not in place of them.

Who is eligible to participate in the Select Program?

The program is only available for girls in 10U and 12U. All girls in these age groups are eligible for consideration, though not all players are guaranteed to be selected for a team. Players can't "play down" out of their age group in Select.

Girls that want to participate on a Select Team are only eligible if they participate on a SDYS Spring 2017 Team. Players must participate fully with their SDYS Spring team.

How are teams selected for the Select Program?

The number of teams for each age group to be determined by number of players interested and coach commitment.

Players will be considered based on a combination of feedback from coaches from previous seasons and observations from the "Select" workouts, player clinics, and player evaluations (see attached timeline for dates). Players must attend at least one of these dates. Players are strongly encouraged to be at as many of these as possible.

It is possible that not all interested players will be chosen for a Select Team.

Who will be coaching the Select teams?

The SDYS Board will vote on coaches for the Select teams. If you are interested in being considered as a coach, please email: coaches@sdyssoftball.com

How do I indicate interest in the Select Program?

If you have not registered for the Spring Season through Blue Sombrero, a question has been added for you to indicate interest in Select. If you have already registered you can send an email to: playeragent@sdyssoftball.com expressing your interest.

Will there be additional costs?

For girls that are selected, there will be a separate registration on the league website and a fee of $125 will be assessed to cover Select tournament entry fees and an extra uniform that the Select teams will wear. This registration option will not open until after the teams are selected in late January.

How does Select impact All-Stars?

Select participation has no bearing or weight on the all-star selection process. Girls that choose not to play or are not chosen for Select are still eligible and strongly encouraged to try out for All-Stars.
