What is the Select Program?
The Select Program was formed by USA Softball (our league's governing body) to provide a more competitive environment for highly skilled Recreation league players.
Note: This is not the same as the Spring Select program. Please see the Spring Ball Season page for details regarding the spring select program.
What is the extra time commitment?
SDYS Fall Select teams will primarily play double header games on Sundays from September 14th through Mid November. SDYS Select teams will also have a minimum of 1-2 practices held during the week at Cardiff Sports Park.
Time and travel commitments on Sundays will vary from week to week, based on a variety of things. Some Sundays might be open, some might have a practice, but other Sundays might require a much longer time commitment due to a tournament-style game schedule and/or possible travel to other fields in San Diego County.
Who is eligible to participate in the Select Program?
The program is only available for girls in 8U, 10U, and 12U. All girls in these age groups are eligible for consideration, though not all players are guaranteed to be selected for a team. Players can't "play down" out of their age group in Select.
Girls that want to participate on a Select Team are only eligible to participate on a SDYS Select Team and may not play on a Fall Rec team at the same time. Players must participate fully with their SDYS SELECT Team.
How are teams selected for the Select Program?
The number of teams for each age group to be determined by number of players interested and coach commitment.
Players will be considered based on a combination of feedback from coaches from previous seasons and observations from the Select workouts. Players must attend at least one of the workouts. 2025 Select workout schedule is as follows:
Date: TBD week of August 25
Location: Cardiff Sports Park, Field #1
Times: 8U at 9:00 am, 10U at 10:00 am, 12U at 11:00 am
It is possible that not all interested players will be chosen for a Select Team.
Who will be coaching the Select teams?
The SDYS Board will vote on coaches for the Select teams. If you are interested in being considered as a coach, please email: coaches@sdyssoftball.com by August 11, 2025.
How do I indicate interest in the Select Program?
If you have not registered for the Fall Season, a question has been added for you to indicate interest in Select. If you have already registered and forgot to indicate your interest, you can send an email to: playeragent@sdyssoftball.com expressing your interest.
Will there be additional costs?
For girls that are selected, registration fee is an additional $175. Additional fees will be assessed to cover Select tournament entry fees. The exact costs are not yet known as they will depend on how many games/tournaments each team plays, but are generally expected to run approximately $50-100 per player.
How does Select impact All-Stars?
Select participation has no bearing or weight on the all-star selection process. Girls that choose not to play or are not chosen for Select are still eligible and strongly encouraged to try out for All-Stars.
